DO NOT TRUST HOMEAWAY.COM - Homeaway
I always trusted Homeaway.com to sublet homes for vacation, until my recent booking where I LOST my entire week%u2019s rental fee due to a fraudulent broker, who was represented on Homeaway.com.
You should always trust your gut. There were several red flags with this rental property on Homeaway so I called homeaway more than a half dozen times with various questions about fraud. I asked homeaway multiple times to call the home owner to make sure this property is legitimate due to the various issues I had with the rental agent. I was constantly reassured that this was a reputable listing and if I write a personal check then I was covered by the basic rental guarantee.
Before I made my second deposit, I called Homeaway another few times with suspicions about this property since their listing was taken off of their site. Homeaway once again told me there was no issue with this listing and to feel confident to send my final payment. I again asked for Homeaway to check on this listing due to my legitimate concerns. Again, they repeated the same mantra, that %u201Cthis was a reputable listing.%u201D
After sending my last deposit, I was contacted by my bank that there was suspicious activity by the South Florida rental management company. Low and behold this company committed fraud%u2026stole my entire payment and ran. I immediately contacted Homeaway and they FINALLY reached out to the homeowner to find out that the property should not have been listed on Homeaway for months before I sent out my checks.
Homeaway could have made ONE phone call months ago to the homeowner and I wouldn%u2019t be in this situation, but instead they placated me with connecting me to the fraud department and told me the property was a legitimate rental without doing the research to confirm this information.
Homeaway is washing their hands from this incident and taking no responsibility. I am out of money and a vacation rental when I booked months in advance for my family. I have spoken to several supervisors at Homeaway and they all told me that homeaway won%u2019t report this listing as a fraudulent property since this property was legit in the past. Well, it is not legit now and they are doing nothing for me. Please learn from my mistake and DO NOT TRUST HOMEAWAY.COM. Spread the word.
